Kansai Electric to assist solar power generation for Sharp plant

OSAKA —Kansai Electric Power Co will help operate Sharp Corp’s new large liquid crystal display panel plant in Osaka to be powered with solar panels, company sources said Monday.

The agreement, to be announced later in the day, will mark a full-fledged entry into the solar power generation business by the Osaka-based electric utility and see Kansai Electric set up a new solar power station near the Sharp plant, according to the sources. Sharp’s new LCD panel plant is now under construction on the coastal area of Sakai, Osaka Prefecture. The electronics maker plans to install solar panels on the plant’s rooftop to supply energy necessary for factory operations.
